Frequently Asked Questions

Neidan, translated as "Internal Alchemy," is the highest level of Taoist spiritual cultivation. Unlike external alchemy which works with physical substances, Neidan uses the body itself as the alchemical laboratory, transforming jing (essence), chi (vital breath), and shen (spirit) into progressively refined states of consciousness.

Practiced for over 2,000 years within Taoist lineages, Neidan encompasses a complete system of meditation, breathwork, movement, and inner cultivation. The Wu Ji School transmits this lineage through Andrew Kenneth Fretwell, a 36-year practitioner and lineage holder of One Cloud's Seven Formulas of Immortality.

The primary goal of Neidan is the cultivation of the immortal spirit body, known as the spiritual fetus. Through systematic practice, the practitioner refines their essence, vital breath, and spirit, gradually integrating the soul fully into daily embodied life.

In practical terms this manifests as a steady, unshakeable inner peace that does not rise and fall with outer circumstances, a restored capacity for authentic feeling, and the return of the open, trusting heart of early childhood. Not as a temporary experience, but as a permanent shift in one's way of being.

Qigong is the foundation. It works primarily with the physical body and its energy channels, clearing blockages, building vitality, and establishing the energetic vessel that deeper practice requires. Wu Ji Gong is the most powerful form of Qigong available, integrating Tai Chi, Feng Shui, I Ching, and inner alchemy principles.

Neidan goes deeper. Where Qigong clears and builds, Neidan transforms. It works with the emotional body and ultimately the soul body, using the refined energy cultivated in Qigong practice as the raw material for a more fundamental alchemical transformation.
